Definition: Estimated percentage of women with a live birth who for a period of two weeks or longer after delivery felt sad, empty or depressed for most of the day and lost interest in most things they usually enjoyed (e.g., an estimated 13.5% of California women with a live birth in 2013-2015 experienced postpartum symptoms of depression).

Footnote: Postpartum depressive symptoms are measured from birth until the time of survey, between two and nine months after delivery. MIHA is an annual population-based survey of California resident women with a live birth in the calendar year. Percentages are weighted to represent all women with a live birth in California and counties during the time period. Refer to the MIHA technical notes for information on weighting methods.
