Definition: Number of hospital discharges for firearm-related injuries per 100,000 children and young adults ages 0-24, by intent and age group (e.g., in 2021, the rate of hospitalization for firearm injuries due to assault among California youth ages 15-19 was 4.2 per 100,000).

Footnote: Data are based on the number of hospitalizations, not the number of young people hospitalized. Data are limited to hospital admissions; emergency room visits that do not result in admission are excluded. Sums across intent categories may be higher 'all intents' due to cases with multiple intents. 'Legal intervention/war' injuries include those due to legal intervention, operations of war, military operations, and terrorism. Self-harm injuries are not reported for children under age 5. The notation S refers to numbers and rates that have been suppressed because there were between 1 and 10 firearm injury hospitalizations in that group.
