Definition: Percentage of children ages 0-17 with substantiated cases of abuse or neglect, by age group (e.g., among California children found to have been abused or neglected in 2020, 12.7% were ages 1-2).
Data Source: California Child Welfare Indicators Project, CCWIP Reports. University of California at Berkeley & California Dept. of Social Services (Oct. 2021).
Footnote: Children with more than one substantiated case of maltreatment in a county are counted only once. Children with substantiated cases of maltreatment in more than one county are counted in each county but only once in California totals. Age is based on the date of the first substantiated case of maltreatment. The notation S refers to percentages that have been suppressed because there were between 1 and 10 children in that group, and to numbers and percentages that have been suppressed by the California Child Welfare Indicators Project.
