Definition: Estimated percentage of children ages 0-17 living in households in which the householder resides with their same-sex partner (e.g., in 2024, 0.6% of California children lived in same-sex couple households).
Data Source: Population Reference Bureau, analysis of U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey public use microdata (Aug. 2026).
Footnote: Estimates are for children living in households and exclude children in group quarters and those who are householders, spouses, or unmarried partners. These estimates are based on a survey of the population and are subject to both sampling and nonsampling error. Due to changes in survey questions and coding for same-sex couple households in 2019, caution should be taken when comparing data presented here with estimates for earlier years. Data for 2020 are not available due to disruptions in data collection. The notation S refers to estimates that have been suppressed because the margin of error was greater than 5 percentage points. N/A means that data are not available.
