Definition: Number of asthma hospitalizations per 10,000 children ages 0-17, by age group (e.g., in 2018, there were 14.9 asthma hospitalizations per 10,000 California children ages 0-4).
Data Source: California Breathing, tabulation of data from the California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (Jul. 2020).
Footnote: Data for 2016 and later are based on International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) code J45; data for 2015 and earlier are based on ICD-9-CM code 493. For this reason, data for 2016 and later cannot be compared with earlier years. Data are based on the number of hospitalizations, not the number of children hospitalized. Transfers from one hospital to another are treated as separate hospitalizations. The notation S refers to rates that have been suppressed because there were, depending on the year, fewer than 12 cases (2009 and earlier) or fewer than 20 cases (2010-2018), and to numbers that have been suppressed because there were fewer than 5 cases (2017 and earlier) or fewer than 11 cases (2018). N/A means that data are not available.
