Definition: Percentage of children ages 0-17 with reports of abuse or neglect, by type of maltreatment (e.g., among California children reported to have been abused or neglected in 2020, 16.3% were alleged to have been physically abused).

Footnote: Children with more than one report of maltreatment in a county are counted only once. Children with reports of maltreatment in more than one county are counted in each county but only once in California totals. For children with more than one report, type of maltreatment is assigned in a two-step process according to the (1) disposition and (2) allegation type considered most severe; details are available from the California Child Welfare Indicators Project.
