Definition: Percentage of public school students in grades 5, 7, and 9 with body composition above the "Healthy Fitness Zone" of the FitnessGram assessment, by race/ethnicity and grade level (e.g., in 2019, 49.7% of Hispanic/Latino 5th graders in California were overweight or obese).
Data Source: California Dept. of Education, Physical Fitness Testing Research Files (Jan. 2020).
Footnote: Years presented are the final year of a school year (e.g., 2018-19 is shown as 2019). Data are based on body mass index or percentage body fat. A large majority of schools use body mass index, which aligns with standards from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but some schools may use skinfold measurements or bioelectrical impedance to measure percentage body fat. The notation S refers to data that have been suppressed because 20 or fewer students in that group scored in the "Healthy Fitness Zone" or below, or because the grade level is not offered. N/A means that data are not available.
