Definition: Estimated percentage of children ages 0-17 with special health care needs (CSHCN) with and without unmet needs for specific health care services or equipment in the previous year, by household income level (e.g., among California CSHCN living at or above 400% of their federal poverty guideline in 2009-2010, 11% had unmet needs for services in the previous year).

Footnote: Children with special health care needs (CSHCN) have or are at increased risk for a chronic physical, developmental, behavioral, or emotional condition and require health and related services of a type or amount beyond that required by children generally. The federal poverty guideline was $22,050 for a family of four in 2010. These estimates are based on a survey of the population and are subject to both sampling and nonsampling error.
