Definition: Percentage of emergency department visits for injuries related to suspected or confirmed abuse or neglect among children ages 0-17, by type of maltreatment (e.g., in 2020, 24.4% of emergency department visits for child abuse and neglect in California involved physical abuse).
Data Source: California Dept. of Public Health, Injury and Violence Prevention Branch, custom tabulation of data from the California Dept. of Health Care Access and Information (Aug. 2022).
Footnote: Data are based on visits, not children; if a child has more than one visit, each visit is reported. A child may be treated for more than one type of maltreatment during a visit; as a result, sums across maltreatment categories may be higher than totals. Visits resulting in same-hospital admission are not reported here (see kidsdata.org's Hospital Discharges for Child Abuse and Neglect indicators). The notation S refers to percentages that have been suppressed because there were fewer than 20 visits for that maltreatment type.
