Definition: Number of emergency department visits for injuries related to suspected or confirmed abuse or neglect per 100,000 children ages 0-17, by race/ethnicity (e.g., in 2020, the rate of emergency department visits for abuse and neglect among Hispanic/Latino children in California was 32 visits per 100,000 children).
Data Source: California Dept. of Public Health, Injury and Violence Prevention Branch, custom tabulation of data from the California Dept. of Health Care Access and Information and California Dept. of Finance (Aug. 2022).
Footnote: Data are based on visits, not children; if a child has more than one visit, each visit is reported. Visits resulting in same-hospital admission are not reported here (see kidsdata.org's Hospital Discharges for Child Abuse and Neglect indicators). Race/ethnicity categories are mutually exclusive. The notation S refers to numbers that have been suppressed because there were between 1 and 10 visits in that group, and to rates that have been suppressed because there were fewer than 20 visits in that group. N/A means that data are not available.
