Definition: Estimated percentage of adults with caregiving responsibilities for children ages 0-17, by employment status relative to the period before the COVID-19 outbreak in March 2020 and caregiver's race/ethnicity (e.g., in Wave 4, 6.2% of Hispanic/Latino caregivers in California, having worked full time before the pandemic, were working fewer hours (part time) at the time of questionnaire).

Footnote: The 'no reduction in working hours' category includes caregivers who were working the same or more hours at the time of questionnaire than they were before the pandemic. The 'unemployed or left the workforce' category includes caregivers who were unemployed at the time of questionnaire and those who were not in the workforce at the time of questionnaire but were in the workforce (either working or unemployed) before the pandemic. Caregivers not in the workforce include students, retirees, permanently disabled persons, and those taking care of home or family. Estimates exclude caregivers who were not in workforce before the pandemic or at the time of questionnaire. African American/black, Asian, Hispanic/Latino, and white categories are mutually exclusive. The questionnaire was administered during the following periods: Nov. 9 – Dec. 11, 2020 (Wave 1); Mar. 22 – Apr. 12, 2021 (Wave 2); Jul. 8 – Jul. 27, 2021 (Wave 3); Jun. 3 – Jun. 29, 2022 (Wave 4). These data are subject to both sampling and nonsampling error. The annotation [!] indicates that the estimate’s margin of error is at least 5 percentage points but less than 10 percentage points.
