Definition: Estimated percentage of children ages 0-18 with and without health insurance coverage at the time of survey, by type of insurance, age group, and legislative district (e.g., in 2016-2020, 42.2% of California children ages 6-18 were covered by public health insurance).

Footnote: Children may have health insurance coverage from multiple sources, so estimates of public and private coverage may sum to more than 100%. Public health insurance includes both means-tested coverage (e.g., Medicaid/Medi-Cal, CHIP) and non-means-tested coverage (e.g., Dept. of Defense TRICARE, Indian Health Service). Means testing considers financial circumstances in determining eligibility. Estimates exclude children in institutional group quarters and those in the active-duty military. These estimates are based on a survey of the population and are subject to both sampling and nonsampling error. Because of disruptions to data collection in 2020, American Community Survey estimates for 2016-2020 did not meet statistical quality requirements and have larger than usual margins of error; see Information and Advice on 2020 Federal Data Quality and Use.
